What is passion? Webster defines it as, “a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object or concept such as a passion for chess or opera.” Most of us have many passions in our lives, whether it is personal, professional or most likely a combination of both. Your professional passion might focus on the product, the company, the process or even the outcomes. Not only do we have passion for what we do, but ultimately, it’s why we do it.

I read an article by Valerie Khoo a few years ago, that discussed how to describe why you are passionate about what you do and the simple process to engage discussion about that passion. I believe we are all passionate but may not know how to tell our story to others. The article suggested that first you start with a spark, something that will intrigue people, you want to provide information about your passion in an easily digestible way that intrigues them enough to want to know more. Once they’re drawn in, it bursts into a flame, and then you can fan it with more details about your story until it becomes a fire. This is when you get to tell other aspects of your story and give other people a real insight into your business, passions and life. (Send them to our website to read more and apply.)

The reason I am sharing this, is to appeal to your passion as a Sales and Marketing Executive to share your stories with potential members about why you belong to SME. I am excited to announce that the Recruitment Committee is again challenging the current SME membership to share our passion about SME through a friendly competition, very similar to last year. Create the spark, invite a guest to one of our upcoming events. Once there, we can fan the flames and create excitement about SME, which in turn should create a fire of burning desire to join our Sales and Marketing Executive membership. Keep a look out for more details of the competition coming soon!

For the next couple of months, starting with the Golf JAM, and the September Membership Meeting, I challenge each of you to go out and spread your passionate SME stories, create a spark, fan the flame and start a fire!
