Thomas Otten, Assistant Vice President of Avera Behavioral Health Hospital and behavioral health service line administrator throughout Avera footprint, has a broad background in administration, with specific training and expertise in counseling and psychology. He is responsible for all inpatient and outpatient operations. His role encompasses strategy, change management, budgeting and therapeutic programming in addition to numerous administrative duties.

Thomas has over 26 years of experience with Avera Behavioral Health and previously served as a counselor, Child and Adolescent Services Manager, and inpatient director.  As a counselor he utilized cognitive behavioral therapy to work with kids, adults, and couples.  In overseeing all aspects of behavioral health services to children and adolescents he helped grow the program from an 11 bed adolescent unit to 40 beds with child and adolescent units.  As the Director of inpatient Avera Behavioral Health, he oversaw all aspects of the 122-bed inpatient Avera Behavioral Health Center, the ECT center, and the Partial Hospital program.  His leadership assisted in moving the patient satisfaction scores from below the 50th percentile to frequently above the 90th percentile.   He became the Assistant Vice President with expanded administrative and leadership duties in December 2017.
